Wereanimals

A guide to everything wereanimal/shifter
The were-animals (sometimes called shifters) are a group of supernaturals that seemingly came out of nowhere about 700 years ago. Nobody knows where they came from, there are absolutely NO legends about were-animals, unlike the Original Vampire stories. Unlike the werewolves, were-animals do not require the Full Moon to shift into their animal. A were-animal that grows up with their birth parents will likely know that they are a were-animal from a young age, as this is a hereditary trait that is passed down through the family. It is in their blood to shift. The first shift takes place during the early stages of puberty, usually out of their control the first time because their hormones spike.

A were-animal shifting from their human form into their animal form is effortless. There is absolutely no pain when shifting into their animal form. Keep in mind that when they shift into their animal form, their clothes do not magically disappear and magically reappear on them. If they shift from their human form into an elephant, their clothes will tear into shreds and when they turn back into their human form, they will be completely naked. They should take caution as to where they shift, especially if they try to turn into their animal in the middle of the city. You don’t see wild buffalo’s or antelope’s running around New York City, so they should be mindful of their surroundings.

Were-animals are basically humans who can turn into ONE animal. They can only EVER turn into ONE animal and there are NO hybrids in were-animals. If one parent is a were-tiger and the other parent is a witch, there is a 50/50 chance that the child will be either or. They cannot be both. At all. If one parent is a were-tiger and the other is a were-panda, there is no such thing as a were-panger(panda/tiger). They only take after ONE of their parents. No matter what either of their parents are. When pregnant, a mother were-animal cannot shift into her animal form or she will lose the baby. A tiger doesn’t have the capabilities to support a human fetus.

Just like werewolves and humans, were-animals have a NORMAL lifespan. They have a human lifespan that usually doesn’t surpass 80-100 years old. They age, they wrinkle, and they can die a natural death with old age. Just like humans, wereanimals can die in ANY way. If they get hit by a car, they will likely heal before their organs shut down. They are immune to most diseases because of this enhanced healing ability. However, if were-animals are stabbed in the heart they will die. If their limbs are removed, the limbs will not magically grow back (unless you’re a were-lizard and capable of regrowing limbs). In order to repair your missing limb, you must reattach the limb before it heals (probably take about 24-48 hours to heal up the area of the wound entirely) and hope that the limb reattaches itself to the rest of the body.

Were-animals CANNOT be turned into hybrids. Hybrids are a new species, so this information is not readily available. If a were-animal is given a few drops of vampire/hybrid blood, they can become ill but their advanced healing will help them get better. If they are given more than a few drops of vampire/hybrid blood, they can become violently ill and die. Too much of their blood is fatal to were-animals, much like a werewolf/hybrid bite to a vampire. If a were-animal dies with the foreign blood in their system, they will come back briefly, only to bleed through their eyes and die like if werewolves are given vampire blood and died with it in their system. Were-animals CANNOT be turned into hybrids, even by consuming the blood of the doppelganger. They are an ENTIRELY different species than the werewolves, even if there are few similarities.

For shifter families: A mother with one shift has a 50% chance of giving that shift to their offspring. A father of one shift has a 50% chance of giving that shift to their offspring. Therefore, if one parent is a shifter, the offspring have a 50% chance of getting that particular shift. If both parents are shifters of two different species, they have 50% chance of getting their mother's shift and 50% chance they will get their father's shift. If their parents are of the same shift (which would likely include incest because there is only ONE shifter type PER family), they have a 100% chance they will get that same shift. For a shifter to have the same shift as another character on the site, they will have to be related some how, some way. Cousins, second cousins, distant relations, that sort of thing. There are were-Bengal tigers and were-Siberian tigers, or African Lions and White Lions, but please TRY to be original. If you already see a were-tiger, think of something different outside of the wild cat family Again, this is passed down through genes, but over time, blood mixes and you get a whole mess of different shifts threading into each other. If you would like to take a shift that has already been taken, you MUST CONTACT the person who has the shift originally. If they agree to allowing another shifter with that same shift, you may make that character.

Wereanimal/Shifter Strengths
All wereanimals have increased healing. They’ll heal from a knife wound within minutes. The worse the injury, the longer it takes. Usually this takes no longer than a day to heal, even from broken bones.
All wereanimals can shift at will and the full moon does not affect them at all. There are special circumstances where a witch may curse an individual, but these cases are EXTREMELY rare and should be very, very well thought out and thoroughly explained.
Speed, strength, and senses are heightened to above normal. They are naturally just slightly faster and stronger than humans. Senses include being able to sniff out other species of supernaturals (except witches smell like humans, so they can’t smell witches out), though this is a characteristic and skill that must be practiced and learned.
All were-animals are more durable and can endure more pain. Their bones dont break quite as easily and their immune systems are above average.
Most were-animals have an ability based on what the animal they can shift into can do, see below for tips & tricks. For example, a bear would have super strength (usually enough strength to rival a vampire), a rabbit/cheetah might have super speed (usually quick enough to keep up with vampires), a scorpion might have paralysis poison, and an elephant shifter may have the ability to remember every detail of their life after reaching puberty and their gene is activated.

Since they're not human, they obviously cannot be compelled by vampires after they've reached puberty.

Wereanimal/Shifter Weaknesses
Wolfsbane: When ingested, wolfsbane causes a wereanimal to become severely weak and feverish. If a wereanimals skin is exposed to wolfsbane it can result in burning them and making them weaker when in contact with large amounts. It’s essentially like acid on the skin of a human. The pain can be devastatingly crippling.
Device: Invented by Jonathan Gilbert (Enchanted by Emily Bennett), the Device was a weapon designed to emit a high-frequency noise that could only be heard by vampires, werewolves, and were-animals.
Magic: Witches are able to curse and inflict supernaturals aneurysms that cause the blood vessels of were-animal to explode.
Broken Neck: By breaking a were-animal's neck, it results in instant death.
Heart Extraction: If the heart of a were-animal is removed , it will cause instant death.
Keep in mind, they’ve basically like humans with the ability to shift into animals. They CAN die in normal, human ways as well, but it’s very difficult for that to happen because of their durability and healing aspects.

Tips & Tricks for Shifter abilities
Research – More so then any other species were-animals require some research, especially if you want a power to go along with them. Whether a shifter wants to shift or not, their animal side is a part of them, this doesn’t have to affect their powers, but can also affect their personalities. A person with a shift that is highly social may get anxious or depressed when on its own, or a usually solitary animal shift may equal a loner personality, ECT. There is so much to discovery and that can be worked into your app if you look! Googling you’re animal plus interesting facts can yield a lot of good searches! Keep in mind adaptations, their environment, ECT. An animal that lives in the arctic may make the shifter have a high cold tolerance, while a desert animal may have a low one. Aquatic shifters may swim better; a bird of prey may have better eyesight, whatever. The possibilities are endless.

Lore – Myths, folklore, and tales are a good way to see how other’s see the animals, and they have to be based in something right? Googling just straight up “Animal Lore” can bring up a lot of searches though. A good way to narrow it down is to look at the cultures in that area and add it in. For example if you’re looking for Polar Bear lore instead of googling “Polar Bear Lore” I would Google “Inuit Polar Bear Lore”. Also keep in mind that many animals have multiple names! Example an African Wild Dog is also known as an African Painted Dog or Cape hunting Dog, this will help you figure out if the species is taken as well. Play around with it a bit and see what works best!

Be creative - This is the wonderful thing about RPing! You can be creative and usually one is encouraged to be! Remember to look into the little things and ask how a human could use them. An Elephant is strong, they are smart and have good memories, everyone knows this. Did you know they can move silently though? A lot of marine animals have water proof coats that could play into their human forms. Desert animals could go without water. The power doesn’t have to be huge to be cool!

Bad is okay – not all traits have to be good. Poor eyesight, sensitivity, quick tempers ECT are all common issues in the animal world. Reproductive issues are another big one, all of which can carry over to a human. Life isn’t all about sunshine, rainbows and unicorns, sometimes stuff happens and sometimes it’s bad.

Normal is okay too – A shifter can already turn into an animal at will, without pain. It’s okay if that’s all it can do. That’s still pretty badass if you think about it.

Its not all mammals and birds – there are a number of bugs, reptiles, fish and amphibians as well to choose from as well. They may not be flashy and cuddly, but there are some neat ones out there. Ants can lift up to 100 times their body weight and pound for pound are the strongest animals. Spider silk is one of the strongest building materials by weight! Ladybugs are considered lucky, and who wouldn’t want a walking good luck charm?

Other Notes -Keep in mind that some abilities may have to be passed by admins prior to being used, and sources and proof of their existence may be required from you, so links to documentation or where you found the lore may asked to be provided. Also like all other creatures’ shifters can continue to learn and grow as they age. So just because you haven’t settled on a power yet, doesn’t mean something can be discovered, learned and developed over time!

the story of shifters

Although the town of Mystic Falls was ‘founded’ sometime in the 1800’s by the Founding Members, Mystic Falls has had a long time affair with the Supernatural species of the world. The Original Vampires were created in Mystic Falls and after they left the place they made home, the village fell apart until it was deserted.

300 years after the Original Vampires left, sometime in the 1300’s, the place known as present day Mystic Falls became a crossroads of sorts. People settled into the village temporarily, resting for their journey for weeks at a time before moving on, feeling unsettled in the village although they didn’t know why.

A group of nomads settled into the land, taking shelter in the winter months when traveling became treacherous. Surviving the winters became mini victories for travelers. This group had been together since the summer months but didn’t know one another very well. In the group there were six families, all from different places in the world and each with a different story to tell. Some barely spoke the same language, but they all had one thing in common: they were fiercely determined to survive the winter. In order to do that, they needed to work together and look out for one another.

A woman had traveled into the area in the early weeks of winter. Along her skin were bite marks, scars from old wounds, her hair mangled and hope gone from her eyes. The group of nomads didn’t have the means to take care of her, they didn’t have the food or the space, but they made room. They shared their food. Hope was born again in the woman’s eyes, but the group believed she was mute. During the first two months, she didn’t speak. Not even a hello or a gracious thank you, but the nomads took her in anyway.

One day around the campfire, the woman listened to the nomads tell their stories of the homes they had come from. One man had traveled with his father and their father from the cool, artic north where there were great white bears they worshipped for their strength and ability to blend in with their surroundings. Another family had come across the great sea that was to the east, in a place where even the winter months were relatively warm and the wolves of red coats howled at the moon, a wolf whose fur was regarded in legends as a slow killer. The woman listened to a woman talk fondly of her home between the trees in the south, where the spotted cat was a beauty to look at so high up in the trees but an almighty predator.

As they were telling their stories of their homes that week, one of the women asked the woman where she had come from. No one expected her to answer, but they thought to ask anyway. When she opened her mouth, there was no more silence. She talked, for the first time in months, and told them stories of her Mama from across the sea, her English accent heavy. She told stories of fields she used to play in with her sisters. When she stopped speaking, someone asked where her family was now, how did she come to this crossroad land?

She told them of the beasts from her land. She came from a land where there were monsters that walked around in human flesh. However, they were demons with fangs that craved to suck the life from human’s veins. The desired blood and were powerful in groups, terrorizing the land and causing mayhem where they walked, taking lives and innocence in their wake. Her family called them nightwalkers, but they’re what the world knows today as vampires. Her family came across the sea to escape the nightwalkers, only to be stuck in a war amongst the nightwalkers and children of the moon.

Someone dared to ask what happened to her family and with great sorrow the woman told her story. Her family had great powers, dating back to ancient civilizations. Her family was picked apart in this war between the vampires and the werewolves. They were witches and although they were powerful, when it came to groups of these supernatural beings, their powers were limited. Her family was picked apart and the girl had been with vampires for the past year and had only just escaped them before she found their group of nomads.

The winter months began to grow colder, but the woman became warmer with the people in the group. Life was returned to her words, animation bringing her face to life. She began to grow beyond her scars and the nomads were brought even closer together, becoming a family of sort. She dreaded when winter would begin to melt. After winter shed its skin, the woman revealed her powers. She showed the nomads that she could help to grow crops, they could farm this land and make a permanent home by the great waterfall. Spring was well upon them and the months became warmer before a decision was finally made among the people that they would stay just a bit longer.

A month after the decision to stay, smaller families began to join the nomadic group until their size had nearly doubled. The woman who had been mute had taken on new life amongst these people, happy once more. As summer began to die and the nights grew longer once more, another group came to their village. The woman was suddenly fearful, telling the nomads that this new group were monsters, they were the children of the moon. If the children of the moon were around, the nightwalkers would be upon them. The nomads and the new settlers fought the children of the moon, slaying them. However, many weeks later, the nightwalkers came to the village.

They demanded the woman to be turned over to them or the entire village would die. The nomads loved one another like family, they had grown to love the woman like a sister and she had even fallen in love with one of the men and was pregnant with his child. The new settlers surrendered the woman though and the nightwalkers took her after having a great fight with the group of nomads. The nomads banded together and went after the group of nightwalkers, using the tools and strategies the witch had told them of to fight the nightwalkers before they returned to the place the vampires had made home nearby.

Despite knowing another group of vampires would come for the woman, the nomads took her back to their village. The woman was distraught, begging them to turn her in before they returned in greater numbers. She didn’t want her new family to suffer as her old family had, she didn’t want them to turn into food or wear this new monster’s skin by being turned forcibly into vampires as well. She begged and pleaded, but the nomads prepared for the nights to come, setting up traps as if they were preparing for wild bears. Vervain laced weapons and traps surrounded the village and they were determined not to give the woman up who had brought their families together and made the land more habitable for all.

When the vampires returned throughout the next few days, they fought. They continued to fight even as they were picked apart. On the last night of their fighting, after so many of the nomads had passed during the battles, three other new faces appeared in the village. The woman began to weep as the last of the vampires were killed. The three other women was her family, the family she had come across the sea with. After seeing the bravery the nomadic group had shown to protect the woman, the oldest woman in the group decided they would be given gifts for their bravery.

They remained with the group until the night of the new moon, when the moon was absent from the sky because the gifts they were giving the group would not be determined by the moon. In the place where the ruins of Fell’s Church sits today, the group of witches stood at the north, east, south and west corners and called upon nature. With the families standing in the center of their circle, they asked that the brave souls be blessed with natural gifts, gifts that their families would be born with for years to come. They were guardians of nature, protectors against the beasts that they had cursed the lands with. They called upon nature for balance, that other brave families throughout the world should be blessed as well in this fight against the nightwalkers and the children of the moon. They started with the six families in the circle though.

The powers of the great animals from the lands in which they came from were bestowed upon them. They could shift without the moon and effortlessly, with no pain. They shifted into one animal, with just a touch more strength than regular humans. They would heal faster. They would move just a little faster. Endured, they would survive throughout the ages and become guardians of nature. They would brave the other creatures in the world. Whereas the vampires and werewolves were created out of malice or revenge, the shifters were created by nature to protect and not just them, but their families to come. They were as mortal as humans, capable of dying in the same ways humans could, but their gifts would give them additional strengths in the years to come. Thus, the wereanimals were created.
